Source governance for newsrooms

Know who your newsroom quotes.

soven is a browser extension that records the sources behind every story as reporters work. A reporter approves each record. Editors get a source repository the newsroom owns, and a clear picture of whose voices make it into the coverage.

How It Works

Reporters don't adopt manual tagging, so soven reads the story and does the first pass. The reporter stays in charge of every record.

  1. Capture

soven reads the draft or published story in the browser and suggests each person quoted, with role and context.

  2. Approve

The reporter confirms or corrects each source. Every field the model fills in shows a confidence score.

  3. Match

soven recognizes sources the newsroom has used before and links them, so one person is one record across stories.

  4. Report

Editors see the newsroom's sourcing in one place: who appears, how often, and who's missing.

What Editors See

A newsroom-level rollup built from records reporters have already approved, not a one-time audit that goes stale.

  • Repeat sources and how often the newsroom returns to them
  • On- vs. off-record counts by beat and reporter
  • Institutional vs. community voices in the coverage
  • Representation across the people quoted, configured by the newsroom
  • Gaps: communities and perspectives that never appear

Your Sources Stay Yours

Source records are sensitive. soven is built around that.

  • The newsroom owns its repository. soven holds records only to run the service.
  • Each newsroom's records are kept separate unless the organization chooses to combine them.
  • Export or delete at any time, and at the end of a contract.
  • A person approves every record. Nothing enters the repository on the model's word alone.

Built by Journalists, for Journalists

soven was designed by an investigative reporter and shaped by working reporters from the start, so it fits how newsrooms already work.

Run a Pilot

Pilots run across one or more newsrooms, include onboarding and support, and end with a source audit report for leadership. Email hello@usesoven.com with your newsroom's name and what you'd like to learn about your sourcing, and we'll set up a demo.
